Sunday Funday: The Vancouver Sun Run is a family affair

Blue Ribbons all around! Congrats team Manuel!

Christie and I have always tried to inspire people to live healthier more active lifestyles by sharing our passion for health & fitness, as well as sharing our family’s daily routines.  ”Lead by example” is a motto in our household and growing up as an obese teenager, I decided a long time ago to help families (in particular my own) add small, daily routines to make sure that health and fitness is a part of everyday life.

This year, one early morning over breakfast, Christie (aka Mom_ontheRun) said “we need to do the Sun Run this year… as a family!”  And or course, anyone who knows Christie, once she gets an idea in her head and puts it into motion there’s no turning back.  I love that about her!     We registered that morning for the “Shaw Mini 2.5km run“.  The girls were pumped!

Yesterday, Sunday April 15th, 2012, we put in motion a new family tradition.  We hope to make this an “Annual Manuel” event for generations to come.

Have you created your own family tradition that’s rooted in improving not only your lives but that for generations to come?  Pretty powerful when you think about it…

Below is a slide show of a few pictures from our Sunday Funday (The Vancouver Sun Run Family Affair).

History of the Vancouver Sun Run

(reposted from the official Sun Run website)

The Vancouver Sun Run has been Canada’s largest 10K road race since its inception in 1985.

Founded by former Canadian Olympians Dr. Doug and Diane Clement along with Dr. Jack Taunton, the run’s purpose was to promote the benefits of running to improve health and fitness as well as support elite amateur athletics.

The first run attracted 3,200 participants.

Through the years the run captured the imagination and hearts of individuals wanting to improve their health and wellbeing. The event morphed into the phenomenon it is today with thousands upon thousands descending upon the streets of Vancouver each year in celebration of Sun Run Sunday!

The run is supported by its loyal host committee and an army of over 3,000 volunteers.

The Vancouver Sun Run is still Canada’s largest 10K road race and is now the 2nd largest timed 10K in the world.

An incredible 49,365 registrants signed up for the 2011 Vancouver Sun Run with participants taking in the beautiful Vancouver scenery under sunny skies.

The Vancouver Sun Run has truly become one of Vancouver’s traditional rites of spring and is preparing for its 28th year running.

LOL – Most people think of the SUN RUN and envision mass amount of people…not the case for our 6 minutes past the 8am start…the mini took off right as scheduled and we spent the entire course at the back of the pack. A fantastic experience and look forward to organizing families to join us in the future. I must admit I actually signed the four of us up for the 10km run, but opted on Saturday to downgrade due to Chardonae’s joints, thank goodness we did, because with Dai’s tight back and incredibly sore abs, I got a pretty great workout just piggy backing the girls! Might even look into runs/walks that are connected to a cause for our ‘Annual Manuel’ tradition…so many worthy and family fun options out there! Thanks SUN RUN for getting us in motion tho!
