In 2010, I participated in the first ‘Nutts Cup’ to commemorate his life. CrossFit Vancouver members brought their friends, newbies to CrossFit, who participated in their first CrossFit workout. More than 200 people participated. Then, to top it off, the veteran fire-breathers bravely attempted the Nutts Hero WOD. In the end, 2010 Games competitor Garth Prouse took it down on the men’s side, while Eunice (Emily Beers) topped the women.
Nutts Cup: The History
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Andy Nutts, he was a beloved coach here at CrossFit Vancouver. He wanted to make a difference in life, so he joined the Canadian Army. He achieved his dream of leading men into combat when he secured the most sought after role in the Canadian Military – platoon leader in Afghanistan.
Andy led from the front and was killed in Afghanistan at the end of 2009.
He was a special human being.
In 2011, the Nutts Cup turned into a team competition. Andy Nutts was a socializer, so the desire was to make his event representative of who he was. Over 30 teams of three competed with $5000 up for grabs, and in the end Andy, Max, and Joy took home the cup, beating out an American all-star team made up of two of the best CrossFitters in the world, Ashleigh Moe and Noah Peters (both individual CrossFit Games athletes).
Here’s a slideshow highlighting my experience from last year’s 2011 Nutts Cup:
And now, with just over a month until the 3rd Annual Nutts Cup is on, they’ve added another element to the community of would be competitors.
The format, like last year, will allow teams of three (two men and one woman) compete in a series of events against one another – the maximum allotment of teams is 30 and they “sold out” in the first hour! This year the extra element precludes a seeding system which is not based on physical prowess but rather on creativity and fun. Each team submitted a short video introducing their teams. Based on video ranking will determine how the team fairs on the first event i.e. maybe a head start on a timed WOD. Each day leading up to the August 11th competition a new video will be showcased at WODHog.ca (check it out here)
Our team “Suns Out, Guns Out” is comprised of the Unaffiliated power duo Ian and Maren Chapman, and myself, the Moose.
Here’s the video Maren put together for our team:
