How TELUS and digital tools are keeping my health in check

How TELUS and digital tools are keeping my health in check
I’ve always been open to talking about my health challenges. It was hard for me to admit at first, but if you’re reading this, I’m sure you know that I battled obesity as a teenager.

To top it off, I suffer from neutropenia – an autoimmune disorder that affects my white blood cells. To make a long story short, my primary defense systems intended to fight against infections are pretty weak. Those suffering from neutropenia are more prone to infections, common colds, or any other type of illness.

These two conditions combined – obesity and neutropenia – really forced me to take a hard look at my health overall, from lifestyle choices to exercise and diet. I had to figure out what my triggers were, how to identify them and how to stay on top of them. For other people managing chronic illnesses, this won’t be news to you!

Smart Tech has Helped Me Maintain a Healthy, Well-Balanced Lifestyle

What I found was the key to my success, was a well-balanced lifestyle such as daily movement with purpose, mindful meditation, and concentrated personal development, including self-management and continued dialogue with my healthcare team. Health tech, like wearable health technologies, also play a huge role in helping me manage and stay on top of my health and wellness overall. I receive medication reminders and can continually track my nutrition intake, how well I sleep, resting heart rate along with heart rate variability , the number of steps I take and more – the possibilities are endless!

I manage my data with my smartphone mostly and my go-to apps  along with some indispensable devices like my Withings body composition Wi-Fi scale, Tangram Smart skipping ropeWithings Activite smart watch , just to name a few. I find that having one place to store all my health data, that I can easily access and share with my healthcare provider, has made a world of a difference. Seriously, it’s been awesome! It’s kept me more honest with myself and has helped me and my healthcare team make any necessary adjustments as quickly as possible before any negative impact on my health occurred.

Health tech has helped me stay in control of my conditions and on top of my challenges, boosting my self-confidence and my sense of empowerment: I am in complete control of me in such a cool way!

What Does a Phone Company Know About Health Management? (a lot more than you think!)

Most people think phone companies are just about phones and the latest devices – and I did too! It wasn’t until I became a Team TELUS member that I learned about their involvement in health management and all the super cool things they’re doing and creating to not only help people like me who need more careful attention, but all of us! How many of you can say that your phone carriers truly care about how healthy you are?! How amazing is that? One of the coolest things I’ve seen so far is a tablet provided by TELUS that is connected to a “smart” blood pressure cuff that allows people with heart disease to check their own vitals from home and immediately transfer that information to their virtual healthcare team who can review and make sure all looks good!

Personal Health Records and Home Health Monitoring will revolutionize health management

"PHRs are user-friendly, online solutions that give patients a way to manage their own health information. A self-controlled snapshot of an individual’s health record, Canadians with a PHR can add such information as their birth date, emergency contacts, health history, and lists of allergies, conditions and chronic diseases. Allowing patients to take everyday healthcare into their own hands, Canadians can also use PHRs in emergencies, when travelling, or when working with physicians unfamiliar with their health histories."

Do you have a PHR yet?

And when it comes to Home Health Monitoring , Telus and the Province of BC are leading the way and improving health care through technology to the tune of $52 million! Read the press release for full details.

Think of all the potential health risks we can avoid when our smartphones can now immediately communicate data to our doctors?! And this is just barely scratching the surface on all the ways TELUS is leading the way in health IT to help transform the way doctors and other healthcare professionals deliver care to people like me and to all of us across the country.
