6 Things You Might Not Know About the Grouse Grind

No. 1: It’s the most ascended trail on earth

The 2.9 kilometers (or 2,830 steps) of the Grouse Grind have been traveled the most of any trail on earth. Accessibility to Downtown Vancouver, spectacular views at the top and bragging rights for those who accomplish it may have something to do with its popularity – over 150,000 people tackle the trail annually. The Grind community is an extremely dedicated one, with many climbers hiking the trail daily – some even multiple times a day!

While most people think of just the physical benefits gained by hiking the Grouse Grind, regular Grinders can make a difference in the community through the Grind For Kids program. It enables those Grinders who are out on the trail on a weekly or daily basis to help sick kids in BC by asking friends, family and co-workers to pledge them for every Grouse Grind they do. The program runs from opening day to the close of the season and all money raised goes to support BC Children’s Hospital.

No. 3: It’s the training ground of many celebrities and pro-athletes

What do the Vancouver Canucks, Vancouver Whitecaps, BC Lions, The Today Show hosts, Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman and Aaron Paul all have in common… they hike the Grouse Grind! It’s not called Mother Nature’s Stairmaster for nothing; many visiting actors as well as local athletes use the Grouse Grind to help keep them in peak physical shape. Next time you’re on the trail, look around. You never know who you might recognize.
