How to Eat Healthy While Smoking Weed

How to Eat Healthy While Smoking Weed
Whatever your reason for consuming cannabis — be it a legitimate medical condition like chronic pain or merely an enjoyable way to pass the time — you are almost certainly familiar with the munchies.

When psychoactive THC enters your bloodstream, it binds to receptors around your body; some of those receptors are in your brain, which makes you feel euphoric, and some of those receptors are in your digestive tract, which makes you feel peckish.

Unfortunately, when you are high, you aren’t exactly likely to reach for the broccoli and boneless, skinless chicken breast. One of the most famous symptoms of marijuana’s high, the munchies, is more likely to keep you incessantly snacking on junk food like potato chips, cookies, and pizza.

If you are trying to eat healthy for overall health, smoking marijuana might seem to get in the way — but it doesn’t have to. Here are a few ways I have found to maintain my diet while indulging in the doja.

Don’t Buy the Junk

The best advice you can adhere to when trying to stick to any healthy eating pattern is to avoid purchasing junk food, to begin with.

Having unhealthy options in your home is a recipe for disaster; your instinct will always be to rely on the fast, easy calories instead of creating a healthy meal or snack from healthy whole foods.

This is especially true when your inhibitions are lowered after you get high. If you don’t have unhealthy food in your home, you will be much less likely to fill your body with junk, regardless of how much weed you ingest.

Snack Prep for Pot Smokers

If merely keeping bad food out of your home isn’t enough — if you, like me, tend to order fast food or junky snacks for delivery after smoking a bowl — you can interrupt this behavior by making healthy snacks ahead of time.

Before you sit down to smoke, or before your edible kicks in, you can craft yourself any of these sweet, salty, and/or crunchy snacks that will make you feel even better:

Then, when you start to feel munchy, you have an easy, tasty healthy option already prepared.

Don’t Smoke Alone

When I visit weed dispensaries near me , I like to take a friend to help me find new strains and try new products. I also like to smoke with the company, which prevents me from over-indulging in herb or falling into a negative mental state as a result of the drug. However, having a company can also be useful in curbing food cravings — as long as you choose the right smoking buddy.

A related piece of advice is to get high before a planned activity. For instance, if you are about to leave your house to participate in a social gathering, your mind will be too busy engaging with other people to register the munchies.

The same is true if you give yourself projects to complete while you are high, like painting a room or pulling weeds in the garden. In fact, marijuana will likely make dull chores more exciting while keeping you away from junky treats.

Blaze and Daze

“Blaze and daze” is the less clever opposite of “wake and bake” — it is essentially enjoying weed just before you intend to fall asleep for the night. Marijuana is an excellent sleep aid, perhaps even better than prescription sleep medication because it shortens the REM cycle and keeps users in deep sleep for much longer.

Studies have found that using cannabis can cut the time it takes to fall asleep by more than 30 minutes, which is outstanding for those with insomnia or who otherwise struggle to settle into bed. Plus, when you are sleeping, you aren’t eating.

Don’t Stress About It

Ultimately, you shouldn’t worry too much about eating unhealthy while high.

One study conducted over a three-year period found that stoners tend to gain less weight than non-marijuana users. Though the reasons for this finding aren’t certain — perhaps linked to marijuana’s stimulation of the metabolism? — the fact stands that it is unlikely the munchies will dramatically impact your health. As long as you are munching in moderation and working to eat healthy and exercise when you aren’t high, you should be able to indulge in your craving for junk food when it strikes.

Processed foods aren’t ideal, but they aren’t evil. If you struggle to keep your munchies under control, you might take drastic steps like refusing to purchase junk foods or preparing healthy snacks ahead of your smoke session.

However, you shouldn’t be too hard on yourself, especially when you are high and having a good time.
