Don’t let sore feet hold you back – join the #SoleisticHealth revolution

Don’t let sore feet hold you back – join the #SoleisticHealth revolution

No foot is too small to leave an imprint on the world, and in turn will bring you to where your heart is. After all, one step can make all the difference…

As a metaphor, no other body part has received as much recognition as the ‘foot’. In literature, it’s symbolic nature is timeless. And rightly so. From the day we take our first step to the day we die, our feet carry us through our life’s milestones. Our feet give us autonomy, self-reliance and, ultimately, they empower us in life to choose the paths we walk and the adventures we lead.

Healthy feet happy dad

Healthy feet, happy Dad… just saying

When your feet hurt or bother you, it can affect your whole body and you can’t fully engage (drscholls.ca). Dr. Scholl’s has coined a name for this connection – Soleistic Health.

What’s the connection between feet, our health, mind and body?

When Dr. Scholl’s invited me to review a few of the Active Series™ Replacement Insoles I had to smile. I’ve been a user of Dr. Scholl’s products for over 10 years and often recommend them to my tribe.

As someone always on the lookout for products that help support healthy, active lifestyles, I was excited to learn that Dr. Scholl’s ‘Soleistic Health’ philosophy drives their research and development. From my experience, When my feet hurt, I’m just not myself!

Unhappy Feet, Unhealthy Body

The modern practice of reflexology is based on the observations of an American physician, Dr. William Fitzgerald, in the late 1800s. He found he could relieve pain in the body by applying pressure to the feet. (Chicago Tribune) In addition, Kunz and Kunz (2008) reviewed 168 research articles about reflexology, and suggest that the practice has obvious benefits.

No matter what you believe about reflexology, one thing is clear: a proactive approach to overall health is important. And thankfully, there are products like Dr. Scholl’s Massaging Gel Stimulating Step and Active Series insoles which can make this easy for all of us to practice.

What happens to our feet as we age and what can we do about it?

The average person takes about 10,000 steps each and every day, which adds up to more than an astounding 3 million steps per year. Each step can place 2 to 3 times of body weight force on the feet. (Dr. Scholl’s.ca)

The foot is a complex structure. It has 26 small bones (¼ of the bones in the human body), 33 joints and a system of more than 100 tendons, muscles, nerves and ligaments working together in concert. Over time, this extensive recurring impact and stress from everyday use leads to a certain amount of normal changes as we age. These changes include:

  • The foot becomes wider and longer
  • There is flattening of the foot, a mild settling of the arch
  • The fat pad on the bottom of the heel becomes thinner, causing loss of natural padding and bounce in the step
  • The foot and ankle become stiffer by losing some of their normal range of motion
  • There can be some loss of balance while walking, potentially leading to a fall (Dr. Scholl’s.ca)

Who and WHY should we wear Active Series insoles?

If you are like me or those in my tribe, you lead a healthy, active lifestyle. You’re hiking, running, jogging, climbing, chasing kids and living life to the max each day. Moving with purpose is your lifestyle. The last thing we need to worry about is pain induced by shin splints, runner's knee and plantar fasciitis during your hectic lifestyle and athletic activities.

Taking a proactive approach to foot health and having a preventative maintenance strategy for your feet is key to reducing the likelihood of unhappy, unhealthy feet.

How do Dr. Scholl’s Active Series Insoles help me?

During athletic activities, the foot is subject to the shock impact of 2-3 times your bodyweight (Dr. Scholl’s.ca). Fortunately, Dr. Scholl’s® Active Series™ Replacement Insoles reduces shock by 40% and helps to prevent pain from shin splints, runner's knee and plantar fasciitis.

awesome features of active insoles dr scholls

The active series insoles are designed for athletes and active lifestylers alike. They include a triple zone for full foot protection:

  1. The padding at the ball of foot improves cushioning and helps distribute pressure throughout push-off at the ball of foot.
  2. The arch is reinforced to support the foot and its unique design improves the transition of weight from landing to push-off around the arch area.
  3. The deep heel cup absorbs impact with every step and is very responsive.
  4. The insole also has a 3D weave topcloth with DryMAX™ technology to help eliminate odour.

The Strategy for Healthy, Happy Feet

If our eyes are the window to our souls, then our feet are the doorway to our health. When your feet hurt or bother you, it can affect your whole body, preventing you from fully engaging in life. This sense of being held back and missing out detracts from the awesomeness that is life.

Quality of life is everything today and no matter your age or level of fitness, you can’t argue against the health benefits which walking provides. Walking contributes to general health by improving circulation, contributing to weight maintenance and promotes all-around well-being (Foot.com). If your feet hurt and you can’t walk without discomfort or pain, then you need to do something about it now not tomorrow…

I’m not here to tell you to do anything you don’t want to do, but I feel confident that by implementing a ‘soleistic health’ strategy, your feet will smile and thank me for it.

Hygiene Happiness: 6 Simple Steps to Optimize Your Health & Awesomeness

Hygiene Happiness: 6 Simple Steps to Optimize Your Health & Awesomeness

There comes a time in our life when we ask ourselves the BIG metaphysical question, “What is happiness?” And more importantly, what is it to me? I think to many of us, it’s a feeling; a point of view or perspective; and ultimately, an overwhelming sense of well-being. To each of us, what makes us happy differs, but many would argue that at the base foundation, happiness is largely determined by choice.

This idea of happiness fascinates me and when Unilever approached me on trialing some of the new Dove Men+Care and Degree Men products, it got my mind wandering. Those that read my blog know that I only write about companies that align with my personal mission, and tend to be brands I have an emotional connection with. After 4 years of working with Dove Men+Care, it’s really about how their products make me feel… and in many cases, how it makes the people around me feel, too.

People often say that motivation doesn't last quote zig ziglar

Being someone who sees the glass as half-full, the idea that happiness is a choice fascinates me. I’ve personally overcome a few insurmountable obstacles in my life. However, when I think back, these life milestones seemed like impossible situations when I was in the moment, and I felt a lot of sadness while dealing with them, but at the end of the day, I found a way to cope – and eventually overcome them. In the end, I always got my ‘happy’ back.

What’s my trick? I did simple things that I had full control over. Things that made me feel good instantly. I chose me first. I practiced ‘Hygiene Happiness’.

You’re probably wondering what’s ‘hygiene happiness’? To me, it’s pretty simple: it’s “the things that you do to keep yourself clean and feeling good to best optimize your health and happiness”.

6 Ways to Optimize Your Health by Practicing ‘Hygiene Happy-ness’

Tip 1: Learn something new each day

Feed your mind and the rest will follow. Studies have shown that in learning new things, we exercise our creativity, build our confidence and self-worth, all which plays into improving our states of well-being and personal happiness.

Many of the studies which support these findings found the best results are when people pursue areas of genuine interest – their passions – and in learning new skills, and becoming more knowledgeable or practicing ‘mastery’ in a given subject, they found great sense of happiness.

And if you are still stuck on what to learn, maybe start with a course in ‘Happiness’ (see video below)

“No one is in control of your happiness but you; therefore, you have the power to change anything about yourself or your life that you want to change” – Barbara De Angelis

Tip 2: Move your body with purpose each day

When we exercise a lot of things happen in our bodies. In particular, exercise exerts its effects on the brain through several mechanisms, including neurogenesis, mood enhancement, and endorphin release. When this happens we experience a decrease in stress, increased sense of euphoria, and overall increase in our sense of calmness and well-being. We just feel happier!

(Keep-your-friends-close Tip: Moving with purpose creates a lot of sweat, and if you are like me, I suggest packing one of the Degree new Active Shield sprays in your bag. It’s tough on sweat, not on skin. It goes on instantly dry for a cleaner feel, and provides proven 48 hour odor protection. Your friends will love you for it – just saying!)

Tip 3: Bathe and repeat

John Wesley was onto something when he first said, “Cleanliness is indeed next to godliness”.

Think back to the last time you went a couple of days without bathing. Maybe it was a crazy weekend away with the family camping, and you didn’t have access to running water or other means to clean yourself. Do you remember how you felt? Do you remember what you were thinking? How did that affect your happiness? I’m going to go out on a limb here and presume it wasn’t elevating your happiness levels, right? Remember back to how good you felt as soon as you got clean again.

But besides the health benefits of being physically clean, there’s some undeniable psychological benefits too. One particular study suggests:

“…the notion of washing away one’s sins, entailed in the moral-purity metaphor, seems to have generalized to a broader conceptualization of wiping the slate clean, allowing people to metaphorically remove a potentially broad range of psychological residues.”

Bath Twice a day - Dove Men+Care - Dai Manuel

There’s no denying it, when you feel clean, you feel happier.

Keep-that-happy-feeling going tip: I know I’m a bit weird, but I’m that guy who likes to shower BEFORE and AFTER a workout. Don’t laugh at me, I know it’s probably all in my head, but I feel like I do better in my workouts when I’m clean. My pre-WOD routine is to use Dove Men+Care Deep Clean body and face wash – the purifying grains exfoliate to provide a deep clean and fight dryness. Using the micromoisture technology, it thoroughly cleans my skin without leaving it feeling dry or tight like soap can!

Tip 4: Look good

Call it what you will, but sometimes when we’re looking good we feel good and when we think we’re not looking our best, we feel poorly about ourselves. This phenomenon is real and psychologists call it “beauty self-esteem”. In a recent story in the Huffington Post, “The Psychology Behind a Good Hair Day”, Dr. Vivian Diller explores how simply having a good hair day can positively influence our self-confidence. Who would have thought that hair could be so influential to our sense of happy?

One Happiness in Life - Dove Men+Care - Dai Manuel

Trust me, as a Dad, doing this move when you aren't smelling so fresh gets your kid's attention REAL fast. LOL!

Next time you are looking to up your happiness quotient, try donning a freshly cleaned pair of your favorite jeans, your #1 shirt, and throw a little Dove Men+Care defining pomade in your hair and then take on the world! It’s that easy. Look at that sexy beast in the mirror and give yourself a wink and a smile cause you are looking fine!

Tip 5: Smell Better

Let’s be honest with each other. Imagine you’re on the bus and there are two seats open, one is beside super-smelly guy that has just finished a workout at the gym and hasn’t showered yet, and the other is beside smells-like-roses guy who is fresh and clean. Who do you sit beside?

Getting post workout cuddles with my girls got a little easier... #DegreeMen #RealStrength

Getting post workout cuddles with my girls got a little easier… #DegreeMen #RealStrength

Now if you said the first guy, where were you when I was sitting by myself on the bus back in my university days. Seriously. I had a thing with public showers and would ride home to shower, and believe me, I sat alone a lot.

There’s no denying it, when you smell good, people take note. And when they take note in a good way, it boosts your confidence and self-esteem, making you feel better about yourself and elevates your happiness.

Tip 6: Practice daily mindfulness

Mindfulness refers to “a state of mind characterized by awareness and attention in the present moment, and by an accepting, curious, and non-judgmental attitude.”

Being mindful or present in our now moments helps us appreciate the good we are presently experiencing while avoiding dwelling on past regrets out of our control or stressing over future situations which may never happen. The NOW we live in is where the real magic happens – being present for those relationships, conversations and events as they happen, recognizing and taking emotional and psychological stock on how it makes us feel.

Practicing daily mindfulness has shown to reduce stress, reduce pain, and improve quality of life – and in many reported cases, mine included, improves one’s overall sense of happiness.

So take Epictetus’ words of advice and be mindful of the moment:

“There is only one way to happiness and that is to cease worrying about things which are beyond the power of our will”

What 6 Little Steps Will Mean to Your Life

These 6 little steps are seemingly simple in design, but simple doesn’t mean easy.

Your psychological immune system will kick into autopilot mode on those dark and cloudy days, helping you see the bright side of life is still there. However, it still comes down to choosing YOU and acting on that decision.

What is happiness to you

Question: What is happiness to you?

There’s no wrong answer because your answer is right and will always be right to you. But, to help your search for personal happiness along, if you put these 6 rituals of #HygieneHappiness into daily practice, you’ll find that your emotional, physical and spiritual self will become more attuned to feeling happy. And, when you’re doing things that make you happier, you will want to do more of it.

Happiness creates happiness…and no one has ever complained about too much happiness. And at the end of the day, you’ll also smell, look and feel fantastic – so what’s not to smile about?

So, what’s the deal with ‘Happiness’? A definition.

Happiness is that feeling that comes over you when you know life is good and you can't help but smile. It's the opposite of sadness. Happiness is a sense of well-being, joy, or contentment.”

This definition is great in theory, but does it really tell us anything about WHY we feel happy? Or HOW we can make ourselves feel more of it? And in that case, is there anything we can do to create more ‘happy’ in our lives?

Daniel Gilbert, a Harvard College psychology professor also known as “The Professor of Happiness”, has made his career focus to better understand these types of questions; offering us a greater understanding of what makes us happy.

In Gilbert’s TED talk, he expands on a unique ability we each have as part of our “psychological immune system”. It’s the system that kicks in when we experience emotionally stressful events – working hard to protect us from the worst of it, ultimately aiming to lessen the impact of an emotional downward spiral.

The big reason we have this system, is we have a tendency as human beings to overindulge in our expectations of both positive and negative outcomes. We have a very active “experience simulator” which allows us to visualize things and possible outcomes vividly, and when our expected outcomes like getting a new job, or getting that second date don’t pan out, we experience disappointment and sadness.

As a species, we tend not to manage our expectations very well, and in situations where we don’t get what we want (or what we think will make us happy), we feel sad – sometimes very sad. But you know what happens next? The psychological immune system kicks into overdrive, helping us rationalize and ultimately, ‘synthesize happiness’. Or to put it simply, forces us to look for the positives in the situation that failed to happen the way we thought it would. Synthesized happiness is just as real as natural happiness, but it’s a second line of defense in keeping us on (or in many cases, help us get back on) the happy train.

Do you have any tips, tricks or hacks to shift yourself into a positive state of mind? To help you feel happier about you and life in general?

Drop me a note and let me know.

3 Steps for Leveraging Mobile Technology to Work and Live on the road

3 Steps for Leveraging Mobile Technology to Work and Live on the road

What our typical #WLFMroadtrip offices look like

What our typical #WLFMroadtrip offices look like

Road tripping: A road trip is a long distance journey on the road. Typically, these long epic distances are traveled by automobile; especially RVs — or in our case, our faithful X5 diesel.

As of December 2016, the “Moose” Manuel family have been on the road.

We got rid of pretty much everything we owned, regulated our life to the contents of a few suitcases and have put ourselves on the road full-time. People often ask us ‘Why?' we've embarked on this journey. The answer is triple-fold: 1. to promote the release of my first book, The Whole Life Fitness Manifesto (#WLFMroadtrip); 2. to connect with communities (our tribe) offline, in-real-life; and 3. to embrace the fact there's a very distinct and different way to live and not just the status quo (#ProjectFullTimeFamily – check out www.thelifeenhancers.com for more on this).

Downsizing our Lifestyle so we can Upsize our Living

From the point of quitting our ‘career' jobs in the Summer of 2015 to finally heading off on the road a few months later, we spent a lot of time simplifying our lifestyles. As you can imagine, when you cut a lot of the extra costs in your day-to-day living and boil life down to a vehicle and your basic necessities, you'd be amazed at how far you can stretch your dollars. We literally cut back our monthly overhead by about 75% which simply meant we didn't need as much to survive and thrive anymore.

All this being said, there is one thing we couldn't let go and that was our connectivity with technology. Case in point, here's one of the videos I shot with my iPhone 6 while visiting Yachats, Oregon.

The #WLFMRoadtrip arrives in Yachats, Oregon

So, here's our home for the next 3 days… And the #WLFMRoadtrip continues on! #vacasa

Now that we've committed full-time to the nomadic e-preneur lifestyle, technology is our lifeline. It allows us to continue to work without borders in the geographical sense of the word, and keep us connected to our tribe (and our clients) online anytime and anywhere we find ourselves on our travels.

3 Steps for Leveraging Mobile Technology to Work and Live on the road

The last 3 months have seen me travel from Vancouver, Canada to San Diego, California, from Palm Springs to Toronto, and from Washington DC to Winnipeg, Manitoba… and a lot of cities in-between. My biggest concern was how do I manage to stay connected without amassing a huge cell phone bill? Thankfully, my carrier and technology partner, TELUS, was there to help me weigh out my options.

Step 1: Know what you signed up for

There's a lot of fine print in cell phone contracts. Know exactly what your plan covers you for, paying special attention to how they classify ‘roaming' and its respective charges. Depending on the coverage of your carrier and the type of plan you've opted for, ‘roaming' can take on several meanings and charges can really start to add-up quickly.

Here's an example of how roaming charges breakdown from TELUS.

Step 2: Know your travel options

Before we set off on the road, we needed to know what our options were. We knew we'd be out of the country for more than just a few days, so the simple Easy Roam $7/day option was a consideration. It's really awesome, whether you're travelling long or short term in the US from Canada. In fact, on long-trips you can add US Easy Roam and toggle the feature on and off from your phone, only using Easy Roam on the day you don't have access to WiFi or need to use your phone. Cool right?

Have you ever found yourself rushing to your gate trying to make a flight and remembered ‘damn, I forgot to add a travel plan'! Well, a special note for TELUS customers. Did you know that adding US Easy Roam to your device is easy? Simply text TRAVEL to 7626 from your device or log into your account online and view roaming options. How's that for customer service!

Knowing how much I use my phone for business each day – email, text, phone, tweeting, posting, etc – it made perfect send to opt for the US Combo Pass 80. Meanwhile my wife went with the US Combo Pass 25.

Travel HACK – WiFi is your friend! Use apps like What's App, Skype Calling and Facebook Messenger to connect with people without using up your precious data or airtime. Starbucks are everywhere in the US and not only do they offer a great place to grab a quick coffee, they've got free WiFi for all.

TELUS US EASY ROAM

The TELUS US Easy Roam feature is AWESOME!

TELUS US COMBO 80

The Combo 80 Pack is my travel plan of choice

Step 3: Be prepared for being unprepared

No matter how much you plan, there will be the unexpected moments that just come out of the blue and leave you wondering what the heck!

Telus charger portable

This battery pack gets us 2 to 3 full charges of our iPhone 6's — it's saved me a few times!

If there's one thing I can't stress enough is the benefit of having battery power packs! The little battery pack pictured here has saved me many a times while on the road between destinations.

And if there's one other thing I can leave you with is making sure you have extra cables and adapters. Trust me, if there's a chance you might lose or misplace one, you will. It happens so be ready for ‘when' not ‘if'.

To further help, see if your carrier provides simple ways for you to manage your account and keep up to date with where your usage is at. This is very important and I suggest taking a very proactive approach to staying on top of this. I've heard from a number of my fellow suitcase entrepreneurs that have gone overboard on their data and received bills that would make you faint.

My carrier, TELUS, offers up a cool Data Travel Tracker option which notifies me by text when I hit my 25%, 50%, 75% and 90% threshold of data usage. Very cool feature and has saved me on more than one occasion from accruing extra charges at ‘roaming' rates.

I know our journey is only getting started, but thankfully being disconnected is not a concern we have to deal with. Onward and upward, stay tuned for more on our travels in the coming months. If you'd like to learn more about how to connect with us on this journey, visit www.TheLifeEnhancers.com

Fitness Industry is broken? Then do something about it [#getACEcertified]

Fitness Industry is broken? Then do something about it [#getACEcertified]

obesity epidemic global costsSo what's the problem?

For starters, the Fitness industry is broken.

On any given day, the media would have us believe a range of wild claims: that a fat-reduced diet will make us skinny; that we can sculpt six-pack abs in three minutes or less; and that if we don’t exercise for more than an hour a day, five days a week, we’ll never reach our fitness goals. Above all, we are told that achieving a particular body shape will bring us happiness and fulfillment.

My answer to all this? Garbage!

The fitness industry is approaching $80 billion dollars – a staggering amount! But what’s more staggering is that the obesity epidemic’s global costs has hit $2 trillion a year! This begs the question: how can both the health club industry and the obesity epidemic keep growing year after year? Clearly something is not working…

As someone with over 20 years of experience working within the health industry, I'm embarrassed for the world now. We find ourselves living in a world of consumerism, in a time in history where we are spending more, eating more, and moving less than any other generation before us.

The fitness industry is a business. If people miraculously woke up tomorrow and were healthy, fit, and full of vitality, the industry would suffer. As we get fatter, we spend more on programs to try to control weight, but it isn’t working… we're getting sicker and living shorter lives.

As a father of two, I’m scared for the state of the world’s health. As an industry leader, it concerns me that more people in my position aren’t taking a stand. No more talking, it’s time to do something!

The World Health Organization shares a number of outlines for reducing the global burden felt by the obesity epidemic, which you can read about here. I have to agree with a few of the recommendations, in particular the need for education, supportive environments and communities, allowing opportunities to positively influence people's choices for living healthier, more active lifestyles.

As an industry leader, a trainer, a coach, a mentor, a father, a husband, a friend… I'm going to do my best to ensure I can empower as many as I can to live healthy.

  1. Worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980.
  2. In 2014, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight. Of these over 600 million were obese.
  3. 39% of adults aged 18 years and over were overweight in 2014, and 13% were obese .
  4. Most of the world’s population live in countries where overweight and obesity kills more people than underweight .
  5. 42 million children under the age of 5 were overweight or obese in 2013.
  6. Obesity is preventable.

First things first, let's work on the muscle between the ears

Brain PowerMost people’s beliefs around fitness are driven by vanities. Many of us feel pressure to attain a certain body type, or to achieve top athletic performance. Much of our framework is built on the preconceived notion that having a lean or muscular body is an indicator—the only indicator—of fitness. But appearances, however clichéd this may sound, really are only skin deep. Approach fitness in this way and you’re following a Band-Aid approach to wellness that is simply unsustainable.

Over my nearly two decades in the health and fitness industry, I’ve seen my fair share of quick-fix thinking and short-term goal setting. Whether you’re trying to lose those proverbial 10 pounds to fit into a wedding dress, rock a bathing suit on your next vacation, or surprise everyone at the high school reunion, you have to ask yourself: What happens once the wedding, vacation or reunion is over?

The language you use is crucial to connecting your goals to your ability to achieve them. Replace I can’t with I can, and you will find that it leads to I do and I will. Replace discipline with desire, and you may find that you feel less bullied by your internal monologue and more motivated.  Guilt and blame have no place in the worldwide fitness and health industries.

Work until the brain knows what to doAnd this is where physical and mental fitness really start to reinforce each other in a positive feedback loop. We all know we need to push past physical resistance when we’re working out, on a strenuous hike, or skiing or snowboarding down a tough mountain run. It’s mental focus that comes to our rescue and carries us forward when our muscles start to fatigue. We need healthy thoughts and loving self-talk to encourage ourselves to take care of our bodies, and to face the challenges that life throws at us.

In turn, a strong, healthy body will give you the energy, confidence, and sense of bounce you need to achieve — and surpass —your goals.

Do something about it and take up arms in the war against obesity

Those who know me well know that fitness has been a huge part of my life, but it hasn’t always been that way. Growing up as a morbidly obese teenager, I experienced a self-defeated mindset. I know all too well what it means to fall out-of-health, and it’s not a place I enjoyed being. Experiencing all the stigmas of obesity was traumatic. At age 15, I made a decision to change my lifestyle and I haven’t looked back…

That was the catalyst to me pursuing a career in health, fitness and personal training. Over two decades later, it’s still my passion and I love every aspect of it. There’s a new type of personal trainer emerging today. This new breed of trainer is not just knowledgeable in health, fitness, nutrition, and coaching; he or she is also a MENTOR for the client.

Coaching and training are fantastic, but mentoring adds a whole new dimension, and it’s what the people of today and tomorrow need more than ever. Clients today need someone to empathize with their current situation, identify their needs, and create a plan that goes beyond a number on a scale or notch on a belt. Don’t get me wrong: coaching is great. Coaches have an ability to point out potential blind-spots, and to create plans to help clients reach their desired goals. However, mentors tend to walk the talk, ‘have been there and done that‘ so to speak and more often than not already have arrived at the destination that the client is striving to achieve. Lifestyle mentoring is another level of personal training and it’s where fitness training needs to go.

Coaching is amazing

I'm going back to school – ACE here I come!

After more than 20 years of mentoring, coaching, and training people on and offline, I’m going back to school. I've recently enrolled to take my ACE (American Council on Exercise) certification.

With obesity rates on the rise (34.9% of adults and 17% of children), the need for personal trainers and lifestyle mentors is growing rapidly. Being someone who can help another human being achieve optimal health and happiness is a path to ultimate fulfillment for me. It's a career path that is not only fun and rewarding, but at the end of the day makes a huge impact on the lives and communities of those you work with. Sounds like awesome to me.

If you are like me and you want a job that doesn’t require sitting in a cubicle tied to your PC, and you prefer to be active and move around all day, it’s a great career path to consider. Heck, when it's nice outside I've always enjoyed meeting my clients and groups at the park for a fun and challenging outdoor workout.

Train at the park

Nothing like a great park workout to get the blood flowing… and always best with friends!

You are probably wondering what prompted me to redo my certification – in particular, why I chose ACE .considering there are hundreds of personal trainer certification options on the market. That’s a fair question.

ACE is the only one that has a deep history rooted in 30 years of science-based research, and is the world’s largest nonprofit health and fitness certification organization. The ACE certification is created to help health and fitness professionals deliver the type of individualized programs people need to adopt long-term, healthy behaviors and lifestyles.

Looking ahead to the next 20 years of my career, becoming an ACE Certified Personal Trainer will provide me with a career advantage at thousands of facilities nationwide and the expertise I will need to stand out among my peers. (check out the ACE career guide here:

Leverage Technology to #TakeTheLeap into Health and Fitness

Leverage Technology to #TakeTheLeap into Health and Fitness

life begins at the end of your comfort zone #taketheleapThe past 6 months has been a whirlwind for me and my family. After leaving my career of 18 years to pursue my passions and dreams full-time, I know firsthand what it means to #TakeTheLeap.

Throughout the process of writing a book, trimming back on our expenses, and dialing in the Whole Life Fitness Manifesto program to service an ever-growing community (our tribe) of people looking to take their own personal leaps into health, fitness and active living. We're all learning together what it means to get comfortable with feeling uncomfortable, forcing us to grow as people, and the process has been nothing less than epic.

What Motivates You to Get Comfortable with Feeling Uncomfortable?

Questions to ask yourselfCan you think back to a time when you had to just take a leap into something you weren't sure about? Something that intimidated you, but you were pulled to do it anyways? What did you do or tell yourself to step off and make it happen?

It's part of being human.

We all grow in these moments of uncertainty. Even in those temporary moments where we feel like we're taking steps backwards and not forwards, we're learning.

As a coach, mentor and trainer, I've learned through firsthand experience how challenging it can be to take that first step into a new, health focused lifestyle. I remember as a child of 14 years old, living in a state of morbid obesity, I had no clue what to do or how to do it. But I knew that if I chose to make a change, and really wanted to make it a reality, it was up to me to make it happen.

nothing is impossible, the mere word says I'm possible

Fortunately for me, I took the steps needed to learn the ‘how' and ‘what' of my lifestyle changes – I went to the library (yes, I took my leap pre-Google) and connected with people at school and the local gym to get help. They helped me better understand my food choices as well as how to move my body with purpose. There was one piece they couldn't help me with and that was my ‘WHY‘. This is something that has to come from within if we truly want to make sustainable changes in our lives. I'm not going to go into great detail in this post about the process I went through, but I do talk about this in great detail in the Whole Life Fitness Manifesto.

As a coach and lifestyle mentor today, I'm excited to be able to help my clients and fellow tribe members with new and exciting tools. There's apps to help you with setting and maintaining goals, sites to connect you with like-minded people to hold you accountable, and to top it off, there's very affordable technologies that can keep you accountable to your self above all else.

There's never been a better time than today to learn how technology can help us lead happier, healthier lives.

As part of the #teamTELUS advocacy team, I've had the opportunity to trial a lot of their health and fitness programs and technologies. (But admittedly, I absolutely love their tech!)

3 Pieces of TELUS technology that can help you #TakeTheLeap into Health this year

TELUS offers some of the most sought-after fitness and health gear on the market and has an entire team dedicated to keeping a pulse on the latest and greatest wearable accessories out there. These happen to be 3 of my favorites:

The FitBit Charge HR - one of my favorite activity trackers

The FitBit Charge HR – one of my favorite activity trackers

#1. The FitBit Charge HR: accountability. We all need it from time to time. However, before we can be accountable to ourselves we have to be honest with our current habits. We can set goals all day long, but if we don't have a clear understanding of what our day-to-day habits are and how they play into our goal seeking, we're only going to get so far. The FitBit Charge HR will let you know your activity patterns, sleep quality and tendencies, as well as track and report back on the efficiency of your workouts. It's pretty much a personal trainer on your wrist. One of the best investments you can make in your health this year.

#2. Withings Aura Smart Sleep System: I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but sleep is one of the most important aspects of having a healthy, happy life, period. I've written numerous articles on the subject and highly recommend your read them. But on top of that, invest in a system to start monitoring your sleep patterns as well as aid in improving the quality of your sleep, rest and recovery.

Music goes wireless!

Music motivates us all on some level. Let's be honest there are days where motivation is in short supply. Trust me, create a playlist on your smart phone that has your favorite ‘get up and move' tunes. When you are having those down days, pop on your wireless buds, and get your groove on! Motivation has just gone wireless! BAM!

Check out the full TELUS lineup of health and fitness tech gear at www.telus.com/betteryouTELUS also recognizes that mental health is an important focus for Canadians overall health and in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and Mind Your Mind, recently launched a new iOS based mental health app called thinkFull.

And in case you aren't completely convinced on the WHY behind fitness gear and wearables…

These tools have the ability to motivate people like you and me, and help us stay on track with our health goals. Here's just…

3 Incredible Statistics about how technology helps keep us motivated

  1. The majority (57 per cent) of consumers said the ability to self-monitor was a major reason in their purchase of a fitness wearable (Nielsen)
  2. Fifty-two per cent of wearable owners primarily use their devices to stay motivated to exercise and stay healthy (MaRS)
  3. Nearly three-quarters of current exercise app users are more active than those who stopped or never used their apps (Journal of Medical Research)
