Took a ride on the CrossFit flight simulator tonight

Written by "> | posted in Workout Journal | 1 Comment

Double unders have always been one of my CrossFit “goats”.  More psychologically annoying than physical, for the longest time it just irked me that I couldn’t string together multiple double unders (passing the jump/skipping rope under the feet twice per jump).  For the past 18 months I’ve tried to warm-up using double-unders and have tried to increase my PR for most unbroken double unders in a row… my PR is still 119 which for me seems like an insurmountable feat in itself which will not be challenged for some time to come.  That being said, all this preparation has readied me for my 2nd attempt at OPT’s infamous “Flight Simulator” WOD.  If you are a stranger to this workout and happen to be like me and have an affinity for double unders, then turn away now.

Plain and simple, and still my fave cable speed rope to date

… this workout is NOT your friend if unbroken double unders are not in your CrossFit repertoire.

Warm-up:

  • 500 meter row
  • Tabata sit-ups (my score was 11)
  • 500 meter row

Workout of the Day:  Flight Simulator (for time)

Unbroken double unders:  5-10-15-20-25-30-35-40-45-50-45-40-35-30-25-20-15-10-5

Rules:

  1. You must stop between each set. i.e. set 15, do 15 unbroken, then stop, then move on to 20, etc, etc…
  2. If you trip up, you must start at the beginning of the set you were attempting.
  3. No Singles. This is double under practice time.
  4. 30 minute time cap
  5. Don’t give up!

My time to complete was 10:54 (a new PR!)

I’m happy with this and will try it again (but just not anytime soon!)  Have a go and let me know how you did (post time to comments).  Good luck!

    Hi Dai,
It’s funny. I was doing, or attempting to do double unders during my warm up at my CrossFit gym. I’m still not getting good at the double unders. So I decided to go online and buy a jump rope so I can practice more when I’m not at the box.

Then I saw your post. Love when that happens. I was actually going to email you and ask you for a jump rope recommendation. I see you already put one up on the post!

Thanks Dai. You answered my question. I’m going to buy one now.

    Doug
