What you can expect from Tough Mudder Whistler

What you can expect from Tough Mudder Whistler
Tough Mudder claims it is 'probably the toughest event on the planet' - and I think they're right. And I love them for it!

I've participated in 5 years of Tough Mudder events and I that isn't going to stop anytime soon - in fact I plan to do them till the day I die. Why? Because they're fun and what better way to spend a few hours then to hang out with friends, get dirty and have an experience of a lifetime?

Am I right or am I right?

Each year I put together a post that shares the course map and videos of the obstacles. Not all videos are specific for the Whistler course, but will give you a rough idea of what to expect. And if you are like me, they'll probably both excite and scare you a little.

See you on the course!

[box type="info" align="" class="" width=""] What is the Tough Mudder?  Tough Mudder is a 10-12 mile mud and obstacle course designed to drag you out of your comfort zone by testing your physical strength, stamina, and mental grit. With no podiums, winners, or clocks to race against, it’s not about how fast you can cross the finish line. Rather, it’s a challenge that emphasizes teamwork, camaraderie, and accomplishing something almost as tough as you are.[/box]

Here's the obstacles you can expect from Tough Mudder Whistler 2016...

Berlin Walls:

https://youtu.be/MAmGOeJXgF4

This Tough Mudder staple keeps coming back bigger and badder. At 9’ 6”, that cleat at the bottom might give you a leg up, but it won’t make you Mary Poppins. Whatever your strategy for conquering this wall, don’t forget they come in pairs. And remember, there’s a difference between a helpful boost and an improper touch.

Birth Canal 2.0:

https://youtu.be/P2xONtz3j5E

You’ve already been through this obstacle once, but here’s a second chance to keep it fresh in your memory. Crawl and push your way through a gauntlet of sloshing, weighted barriers to find freedom on the other side. With over 100lbs of water resting on your back, this is no time to be a baby.

Bushwhacked:

https://youtu.be/xOF7rWt9r70

I remember this obstacle from last year – be ready to make your way down a steep slope of trees, bushes, branches and mud… this is no walk in the park, rather just as the obstacles name says — if you have skin exposed, be ready to be “bush whacked”!

Backstabber:

https://youtu.be/yD3aG97w34k

The Legionnaires’ version of The Liberator, this 12' wall is built the same, but the challenge increases tenfold. This time it's fewer pegs – fewer holes. There’s only one way up this mountain, and it won’t be easy.

Pitfall:

https://youtu.be/RtasX-kAA6A

This obstacle looks easy - just walk through water. Only, there are ginormous HOLES and you don't know where they're at until it's too late.

Arctic Enema 2.0:

https://youtu.be/g-7Qa-8-BZU

Is a highway to brain freeze in all the wrong places. Our favorite icy plunge has been updated to include a high speed entry slide and center wall you must scale to escape the 10 tons of ice we jam into this frigid dumpster dive.

Pyramid Scheme:

https://youtu.be/UpgiToy9u_g

It requires a bit of plotting, but unlike its namesake, this obstacle is all about teamwork. Start with a strong base and scramble, climb, and push your way up a slippery incline with the help of your fellow Mudders. Even with an added strip of Merrell’s stickiest rubber sole rolled across its mid-section, this is one obstacle you can’t go alone.

Devil's Beard:

https://youtu.be/8mnBC7w_p84

This obstacle involves climbing up a series of muddy hills underneath giant netting. At the top, a group holds the net while the other participants climb upward beneath it. The best method is to hold up the net while also using your strength to get to the top. Use teamwork to hold the net and pull up/push up fellow mudders. It definitely requires teamwork. - thePopularMan.com

Rain Man:

https://youtu.be/gERJ4mqHHGw

Guaranteed to induce fear, a step up from Cage Crawl for Legionnaires only. The pit is deeper, water pours in from above, and it all starts in darkness. This watery trough will test your mental grit in a whole new way.

King of the Swingers:

https://youtu.be/kBUpIG5hEbU

Remember that rope swing you built as a kid? Ours is bigger. Leap from a 12 foot platform to catch a swing arm and reach with all your might to tap the bell dangling from above. Many will attempt - few will make that sweet bell-ringing music.

Mud Mile:

https://youtu.be/KWhDyvnTNW0

This obstacle is a classic Tough Mudder fan favorite, with a few little tweaks to ensure no one comes out clean. We’ve dug the pits deeper, mounded them higher, and cut the angles steeper than ever before in this 2.0 remake. If you don’t start this obstacle with a team, you’ll come out with one, or maybe end up stuck for good.

Balls to the Wall:

https://youtu.be/dASnkrUdWU4

At 16’, this is the tallest wall in the Tough Mudder arsenal. Grab hold of the rope dangling from above, and put your upper body to work as your fellow Mudders watch from below. You won’t exactly need an oxygen tank at the top, but you can count on a shortness of breath.

Kiss of Mud:

https://youtu.be/1nqyi7BmGwg

Kiss of Mud 2.0 puts you down in the muck right from the start. With less than 18” of clearance between tangled rows of barbed wire and your bum, and a floor of slushy cold mud beneath you, there’s nowhere to move but forward. At least now you can pretend you didn’t smell like this before.

Shawshanked:

https://youtu.be/MKd8RWsGbR0

Starting with a barbed wire low crawl, this obstacle ups the ante as Mudders have to drag their muddy bodies up a culvert pipe, and find themselves perched at the end of a 5’ drop into the cold water below. Falling gracefully isn’t really an option, so just hold your nose and take the plunge.

Quagmire:

https://youtu.be/buePYDzzF2M

Shaped like a moon crater filled with treacherous shoe-stealing, unforgiving mud, Quagmire is a mud puddle it’ll be easy to step into, but the way back out won’t be so simple. You can crawl, scramble, or climb a chain of Mudders back out, but we make no promises about your footwear.

Skidmarked:

https://youtu.be/0ilGYY2Ufqs

Even if you can get a grip on the edge of this 10’ slanted wall, you won’t find a foot hold. Angled so its middle sits just out of reach of your swinging legs, you’ll have to find another way to scale this obstacle. Better have a teammate up above, down below, or a pair of wings.

Everest 2.0:

https://youtu.be/49D4JeHS57g

This will be the fastest you’ll ever summit this mighty mountain, but the fall is just as quick. This slick quarter pipe is over 15’ tall, with a recurved top to make it extra hard to get that handhold. You can aim for the top, but there’s no promise you won’t end up at the bottom.

Cliffhanger:

https://youtu.be/9rYf-t9k8gE

Cliffhanger is an obstacle which tests teamwork and camaraderie: a 40+ foot cliff of slippery mud angled at 45-degrees. The Cliff always begins with good intentions: a muddy sprint up onto the slope and transitions into a crawl with handholds and footholds in short supply. Beware if you attempt this obstacle alone, your futile vertical scramble will likely turn into an uncontrolled slide back down into the mud pit below. Successful Mudders will form a chain link of fellow participants slowly inching up the slope. If you want to train for Cliffhanger you should find the biggest hill near your house, measure it, then drive until you get to a hill twice as steep.

Funky Monkey 2.0:

https://youtu.be/4-mtuiiG2JI

Right in the sweet spot between upper body strength and ability, Funky Monkey 2.0 starts with a pair of your favorite childhood monkey bars, angled upward to meet a trapeze. Which, if you can keep your momentum, will send you swinging into an iron pipe descent. Don't lose your nerve on this one, or you'll drop 6ft to take the swim of shame.

Block Ness Monster:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4Wcd5AlYnM

The Block Ness Monster is as epic and tricky as Nessie herself. Mudders have to push, pull, and roll their way through 60ft of slick, rotating barriers. With a little help from your friends, you can rock and roll your way through Tough Mudder's newest obstacle taking teamwork to a whole new level.

Frequent Flyers Club:

https://youtu.be/93lja6p9CK4

As a Legionnaire, you earn the right to bypass Electroshock Therapy at the end of a Tough Mudder Course. Unlike the walk of shame you did this morning, this obstacle takes you to higher ground to watch first timers dodge a field of wires. After your exit to a crash pad below, what comes next is up to you - go straight for a Cold Shock Top or go back for a dose of Electroshock.

Electroshock Therapy:

https://youtu.be/X-05wd-K7xo

The last thing standing between you and that cold Shock Top is just a short, muddy sprint. It couldn't be that bad, right? Ask your Legionnaire friends. This field of dangling wires delivers a punch at 10,000 volts. It's our way of saying congratulations.

And take note, you can never be prepared enough... lol! I remember my first year doing the Dingleberries challenge on the Legionnaire loop in Whistler... it was the first year they introduced the loop. Here's the video:
