Dry and flaky skin? Why it’s essential to moisturize this summer

Dry and flaky skin? Why it’s essential to moisturize this summer
While you may think that you look after yourself because you eat healthy foods and incorporate a variety of exercise into your schedule, could you perhaps be neglecting your body’s biggest organ?

Not only does your skin contribute to about eight pounds of your body’s weight, it’s also the organ that is most exposed to the elements and is responsible for a multitude of things. These include temperature regulation, protecting against dehydration, forming an important immune barrier, and defending your deeper internal structures against all kinds of injury. In short, your skin allows you to do all the daily activities and exercise that you do!

Protecting our biggest organ: The Skin

Therefore, it’s vital that you look after it properly, especially during the warmer, drier summer, and most especially if you are subjecting it to long periods of time in the sun, sudden changes in temperature, and less fluid than usual.

Most of us know that one good way to look after your skin (aside from the very obvious – apply SPF! - all year-round, I use Dove Men+Care Hydrate+Face Lotion with SPF ) to add back some of the moisture we lose from it. But it can be a bit like flossing our teeth, cleaning the dishwasher’s filter, or wiping down the inside of the fridge – we know we should, but many of us just fail to include it into our daily routines.

However, by using superior products that are effective and well-priced, and by including these into your daily showering and getting ready routine, you really can make a difference to your skin.

If you’ve already done some damage and your skin is way too dry, turn things around now by using the Vaseline Intensive Care Advanced Relief Repairing Serum that won’t leave a sticky residue.

Why should we moisturize our skin?

Well, for one thing, it can make us look younger for longer, and who doesn’t want that? (To keep your face youthful and fresh, try this Dove Ultra-Hydrating Crème). The moisture helps the elasticity of the skin, which helps it to bounce back after movement and retains a plump, youthful look.

Additionally, dry and unmoisturized skin looks dull and flaky (instead of vibrant and healthy), is itchy, and leaves dead skin-cell flakes behind on clothes – yuck! This is far from desirable, especially for your lips (keep them smooth and ready to pucker up with this non-girly, easy-to-use, slip in your pocket Vaseline Lip Therapy). According to my youngest daughter, Brie, it's the only thing that's helped her with her summer of chapped lips.

Moisturizing can also help your body to maintain hydration – from the outside in. Using the correct moisturizing products will avoid flaky, peeling (and frankly, unattractive) skin, and will help skin cells to maintain their health for longer.

Avoiding moisturizing because you have acne on your back or face? Don’t! By refusing to add moisture into your skin, it goes into overdrive, producing more oil than it needs to – and therefore worsening the acne you already have. To combat acne, rather ensure that you wash with a mild cleanser twice a day (or straight after exercise) and then moisturize with products that are well suited to your skin type.
