Combat Negative Thinking With Mental Jujitsu

Combat Negative Thinking With Mental Jujitsu
Negative thoughts have a way of creeping into our everyday thinking and I’m sure you can relate.

It doesn’t matter what you’re working on or doing in your life, what kind of situation you’re in with work or with friends, or even trying to work towards something like a passion project, that little voice creeps in and starts filling your mind with doubts and anxieties.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Most people have a natural tendency towards negative self-talk, but mental jujitsu can change that. You are in charge of your own mindset and it is within your power and control to change your thoughts so that you can reach your goals and fullest potential.

How Mental Jujitsu Can Help

Jujitsu is a weaponless martial art, where the aim is to use your opponent's strength and weight against them.  For this reason, it is considered to be a martial art of gentleness and of great flexibility.

Like all martial arts, it takes time to cultivate and requires daily training to master. Most of all, jujitsu uses a variety of attack and defense strategies, which when applied to negative thinking can allow you to defend yourself from unhelpful thoughts and turn them into positive ones.

Negative thoughts become ingrained in your psyche over time and take root over many years. Thoughts such as, "I'm not good enough" or "I won't be able to do this", become part of your everyday inner dialogue and prevent you from achieving your goals. This negative self-talk not only affects your confidence and self-esteem but your well-being as a whole.

By applying mental jujitsu strategies to your negative thinking, you will be combating harmful and unhelpful reasoning that is preventing you from leading a calmer and more focused life. Mental jujitsu will provide you with strategies to defend yourself against negative internal dialogue and allow you to create a more positive mindset that can enhance all aspects of your life and overall well-being.

How To Use Mental Jujitsu

Mental jujitsu will allow you to retrain your brain and the way you think. In essence, it is an exercise in self-reflection. You can also enhance your positive thinking further by interacting and surrounding yourself with other people who also engage in it. By following these simple steps, you can change your mindset and free yourself from your self-imposed constraints and limitations.

1. Identify Negative Thoughts As They Arise

The first step in improving your mindset is simply to pay attention to it. Open your awareness to your inner dialogue. Notice when you use negative phrases such as, "I'm not good enough" or "This just isn't for me."

Identify times when you are being overly self-critical or boycotting your own success or ability. Pay attention to when this happens, at any time, or in any situation.

A great way to train yourself to watch your thoughts arise is through meditation. You can do this really quickly right now. Close your eyes and mentally count to ten. Visualize the numbers appearing in your mind. Now, as you go from one to ten, notice any thoughts that arise. Perhaps you’re reading this and you’re having thoughts pop up already.

Maybe you’re thinking about meditation? Maybe you’re thinking about what you’re having for lunch, or doing at the weekend? Perhaps you’re thinking of all the things you need to be doing later today?

Whatever comes up, don’t think about them unconsciously and get lost in thought, ask yourself; what are these thoughts? What are they saying? What tone of voice do they have? I always find myself having negative thoughts when watching Netflix when I have things to do, and I end up calling myself words like ‘lazy’ or ‘unmotivated’.

These kinds of words have negative effects on us.

2. Pause, Acknowledge and Confront Negative Thinking

Whenever you identify a negative thought, pause and confront it. This way you can prevent the thought from escalating and attacking your self-esteem and confidence. Acknowledge the thought and choose to stop it. Remind yourself that such thoughts are unwelcome , irrational, and unnecessary.

You might think, ‘wait if I am acting lazy, then telling myself I’m lazy will help me make decisions to not be lazy, right?’

Not often.

Imagine you’re trying to motivate a child. If you’re berating them and calling them lazy, you’re putting them down and you won’t have a good relationship with them. If you lovingly support them and encourage them to do something, you’ll get a much better result for everyone involved.

3. Rephrase Negative Thoughts into Positive Ones

When a negative thought enters your mind, rephrase it. Turn the negative thought into a positive one. You can use positive statements and remind yourself that you have the necessary skills and confidence to achieve your goals.

Over some time...
...by rephrasing negative thoughts into positive ones, you will retrain your brain and help positive self-talk to become part of your psyche and subconscious.

This will help you to create internal balance and allow you to prevent negative and self-sabotaging thoughts from occurring in the future.

This takes practice. You’re not going to catch every single negative thought, and even if you practice for years, they’re still going to come. There’s no singular end goal with this kind of training. It’s a life-long process.

4. Visualize Your Goals

Whenever you notice negative self-talk threatening to sabotage you , remind yourself of your goals and the outcomes you want to achieve. Visualize how you will achieve these and use positive statements to motivate yourself and discard unwanted thoughts. Remind yourself that mental jujitsu is an ongoing exercise and form of dedicated training.

By doing this kind of mental training every day, you will be able to create a more positive attitude and improve your confidence. Mental jujitsu will not only provide you with the skills to achieve the outcomes you desire, but it will help to improve your overall well-being and allow you to create a more positive outlook on life generally.

Over time and with practice, you will be able to create a positive mindset and free yourself from irrational and unhelpful thoughts and develop a more focused approach that will benefit all aspects of your life.
