How to Stay Safe When You Live Alone

How to Stay Safe When You Live Alone
Living alone has many perks.

You can eat what you want for dinner, you have full control over the remote at all times, and no one is going to judge you for still being in your sleepwear all day.

It sounds perfect, right?

In many ways, it is.

But, as with most things, it also has its cons.

Of course, it’s easy to feel lonely when you live alone. The other obvious problem is that it’s often not as safe as living with someone.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to stay safe when you live alone, and we’re here to share them.

Get a medical alert system

One of the biggest risks when it comes to living alone is the fact that you could get injured, and no one might realize for hours – or even days. No matter how young and fit you are, accidents happen.

There is always the possibility of you falling and injuring yourself, and if your phone is out of reach, there might be no way for you to get help. Don’t stress too much, though, because if you invest in one of the best medical alert systems , it can detect a fall so that someone can come to help you.

Invest in a security alarm

We’ve already covered why you should get a medical alarm, but there is another type of alarm that you should certainly have when you live alone, and that is a security alarm.

This way, you will be alerted if anyone ever enters your house. Your security company will be alerted as well, which means that help will be on the way soon. As soon as intruders hear the alarm go off, they may get frightened and disappear, because they won’t want to get caught.

Learn self-defense

People who live alone may often be targets of robberies, but they also often travel alone, which means that they make easy targets for muggers. Learning self-defense can be a huge help if you ever get caught in a mugging.

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t try to be a hero – simply use self-defense to get the attacker off you so that you can run to a safe place. There are various kinds of self-defense, such as these martial arts , and any one of them can help you.

Install burglar bars

Most homes in unsafe neighborhoods have burglar bars, and homes in safer areas do not. However, if you live alone, you can never be too safe.

Even if you do live in a relatively safe area devoid of crime, it can’t hurt to have burglar bars installed. An open window may be an inviting invitation to potential criminals, so if you have some burglar bars installed, you can sleep easily knowing that no one can enter your home through your window, even if your window is open.

Get a security camera

If you live alone, you may find that you are more alert than people who live with someone, and you may also find that you are paranoid. Was that simply the wind, or an intruder? Did you hear a creaky window, or is someone trying to break in?

Having security cameras can fix this problem because if you ever think that you hear something, you can check on the cameras, and feel more at peace. On top of that, if someone does ever enter your home, you will be able to see where they are. Click here for a home security camera buying guide if you’re not sure what to look for.

Communicate

It’s easy to get wrapped up in your own world when you live alone. You have your own way of doing things, and you have your own routine.

However, you should never let yourself get entirely cut off from the outside world because then no one will know if something goes wrong. Make a point of calling one of your friends every day. This way, if you miss a call, they know that they should check up on you.

If you are going somewhere other than the places you usually go to, it’s a good idea to let someone know where you will be and who will be with you.

Get a dog

You know what they say – a dog is a man’s best friend. Dogs are fiercely loyal, and because of that, they are often very protective of their owners.

Not only will they attack any unwanted visitors, but the fact that you have a dog is often enough to scare burglars away. Burglars need to enter a house without alerting anyone, so the moment a dog starts barking, their plan is destroyed. Almost any dog will do a good job of alerting you, but if you want to, you can get one of these guard dogs.

Have a panic button

You may notice that we are mentioning a lot of security options. While one – such as cameras or an alarm system – may be enough, you can never be too safe. Naturally, this is even more true when you live on your own.

A great extra security measure that you can take is getting a panic button.

Panic buttons are often stationed around the house, but we recommend getting one that you can carry around your neck so that you can always press it when you need to.

In conclusion

While living alone might sometimes be slightly more unsafe than living with someone, it shouldn’t mean that you shouldn’t live alone at all.

There are plenty of ways for you to ensure your safety. Living alone can be a wonderful experience, but many people never experience it because they are scared.

However, if you take the necessary precautions, you will be just as safe as you would be if you lived with someone else, so there’s no need to let fear hold you back. As long as you do your best to remain safe and alert at all times, living alone shouldn’t be a problem at all!
